Research Data Manager

The short and sweet

As the Research Data Manager, the individual will apply skills as a seasoned, experienced data / information management professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus / medical center / OP and department methodologies, policies and procedures to resolve complex and wide ranging issues where analyses of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. The system will support mobile health research to meet the following needs:

  • Develop, test, and maintain mobile applications and associated server systems that will provide login/authentication
  • Screening, enrollment, consent, data collection, communication and feedback functions in a secure environment.
  • Manage different tiers of data collection depending on the level of consent and subgroup characteristics (e.g., wireless glucometers for diabetes participants) and supply user support resources.
  • Develop and maintain a responsive designed website and alternative methods for gathering data from participants who do not own a smartphone.
  • Survey and study administration.
  • Manage data generated from technologies used by participants such as passive sensors, mobile health applications, and health-monitoring devices
  • Ensure that the data from various sensor technology companies is provided securely and completelyOur participant-facing web portal is designed to engage participants, obtain informed consent, and then collect research data via self-report, device, sensor and mobile platforms that participants choose to connect with.

What you'll do

Working alongside our agile technical team, the individual will design, develop, maintain, and administer a variety of large databases in AWS Redshift, which will require familiarity with MySQL and/or Postgres. The individual will coordinate all incoming 3rd party data and will be responsible for integrating this data with all data collected via internal systems for a variety of studies. The data collected internally will consist largely of survey data, self-reported measurement data, and streaming data from a variety of devices and applications.

The Research Data Manager will help organize data in Redshift, AWS, and build additional pipelines into an existing Airflow ETL, which ultimately delivers data products to customers. The individual will have strong skills in MySQL or PostgreSQL and intermediate competency in a higher level object oriented language (Python is ideal, but it is also acceptable if the candidate knows Ruby, C++, etcetera and is able to quickly teach him/herself Python). The Research Data Manager will have some prior experience with ETLs, and understand basic database concepts (e.g., relational database systems, data types, complex joins). The individual will work extensively with an Airflow ETL that runs within AWS (Redshift, RDS, S3, EC2). Minimum duties would include adding Redshift/PostgreSQL code to create analysis-ready tables and understand how to integrate them appropriately into the Airflow ETL. This position will work within the Data Team and in coordination with our Study-Intake team to understand the desired data products to provide to our clients.

The Research Data Manager will manage data dictionaries and documentation for all databases and create algorithms for scoring and deriving data/instruments for analytic purposes. The individual will assist researchers and fellows in navigating data points/data sets/data streams available for use in their analysis. The individual will also write reports and create data visualizations as requested in support of various research projects.

About us

ABOUT EUREKA
Eureka is a UCSF Platform for digital medical research studies building on the success of the Health eHeart Study, a digital long-term study of heart disease with more than 230,000 participants. Our platform hosts website and mobile app studies so that anyone can answer surveys and share iHealth, Fitbit, or other health data. This allows medical research studies to get up and running faster and reach more people at a much more affordable rate. In this way, we connect medical researchers and participants to accelerate discovery.

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE / CARDIOLOGY
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the UCSF School of Medicine. To advance health, the Department of Medicine develops and supports innovators in patient-centered care, scientific discovery, medical education and public policy across four main sites (Parnassus, SFGH, VAMC, and Mt. Zion) and 39 divisions. The Cardiology Division at Parnassus/Mt. Zion runs several clinical practices in multiple sites, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars through Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and non-ACGME training programs.
